Egypt Daily News – Dr. Badr Abdel-Aty, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, emphasized the importance of addressing both emerging global challenges and the existing shortcomings in the international security framework during a speech at the United Nations.
He pointed out that while issues such as digital interaction, crime, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence are critical and deserve attention, they should not overshadow the persistent failures of the collective security system, particularly regarding the United Nations’ role in maintaining international peace and security.
He expressed concern that the disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation regime is increasingly threatened.
Abdel-Aty highlighted the real risks posed by the potential use of nuclear weapons, which have been manifest in the current geopolitical landscape, notably referencing ongoing tensions in Gaza.
He noted that the threat of nuclear weapons is no longer a distant concern but rather a pressing reality, especially with nuclear states actively modernizing their arsenals.
Furthermore, he urged for serious international efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons, advocating for the establishment of nuclear weapons-free zones and compliance with resolutions from the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, particularly the 1995 resolution concerning the Middle East.
His comments reflect a call for renewed commitment to disarmament and a collective approach to enhancing global security amidst rising tensions and uncertainties in the international order.
