Egypt Daily News – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday his resignation as head of government and the ruling party. Trudeau said in a televised speech from Ottawa: “I intend to submit my resignation as party leader and prime minister.”
He added: “I asked the party to start this process, this country needs a real choice, and it has become clear that there are internal battles that I cannot be the best choice to fight.”
He said: “I have always fought because I feel for Canadians and I have always been motivated to fight for the benefit of Canadians. Despite all the efforts made, Parliament has been paralyzed for months.”
He continued: “I had said that we need a new period of parliamentary work, and therefore this situation will continue until the 24th of next March.” Thus, Trudeau effectively ends his nearly ten-year term.
Trudeau came to power in 2015 before leading the Liberals to two more victories in the 2019 and 2021 elections. But he now trails his main rival, conservative Pierre Poilievre, by 20 points in opinion polls.
