Egypt Daily News – The Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade announced today, Saturday, that the Abu Qurqas sugar factory returned to work this year, after it had stopped during the last season.
The Ministry indicated, in a statement, that the factory received the targeted quantities of supplied cane to operated it, and completed production according to the established plan, within the framework of the state’s keenness to enhance food security and achieve self-sufficiency in basic commodities.
The Ministry’s statement pointed out that the five affiliated factories, “Kom Ombo, Edfu, Arment, Qus, and Nag Hammadi,” were also in operation. As for the two Girga factories. they will be operating as of January 28, and the Deshna factory as of next February 1.
The Ministry explained that the factories are currently operating according to a strategy aimed at achieving the maximum benefit from the two sugarcane crops, as production lines in the factories have already been operated to produce sugar from the cane.
It pointed out that the supply operations for this season were carried out according to the used mechanisms, as the quantities of reeds allocated for operation were received, knowing that there are continuous efforts to ensure the balance between the government purchase price and the market prices, in order to preserve the rights of farmers and encourage them to supply the state factories.
The Ministry of Supply renewed its full commitment to maintaining the stability of the sugar market, whether through local production or import according to the needs of the market, to ensure the availability of the commodity at reasonable prices for consumers.
The Ministry also continues to coordinate with the relevant authorities to develop sugar factories and raise their operational efficiency in order to achieve the state’s goals of enhancing local production and achieving sustainable food security.
Abu Qurqas Sugar Factory is one of the oldest sugar factories in Egypt going back for around 157 years.
