Egypt Daily News – In a rare medical case highlighting the advancements in complex surgeries at Sohag University Hospitals, a medical team from the Department of General Surgery, Oncology, and Laparoscopic Surgery successfully saved the life of a 35-year-old patient. The patient had been suffering from severe abdominal pain and persistent vomiting, and medical examinations revealed the presence of metallic foreign objects in his digestive system, which he had repeatedly swallowed due to a psychological disorder.

Dr. Hassan Al-Noamani, the university president, emphasized that Sohag University Hospitals aim to be a leading center for treating complex cases in Upper Egypt. He praised the highly skilled medical staff for their ability to handle challenging cases and affirmed the university’s commitment to equipping hospitals with the latest medical technologies to provide the best possible healthcare services.

Dr. Magdy Amin Al-Qadi, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board, stated that this case reflects the advanced capabilities of the hospital’s surgical departments. He noted that the patient was managed professionally from the moment he arrived at the emergency department until the surgery was successfully performed and he was discharged in stable condition.

Dr. Ahmed Kamal, the hospital’s executive director, explained that upon arrival at the emergency department, the patient exhibited serious symptoms. Imaging revealed sharp metal objects, including lighters and small scissors, in his digestive system, posing a significant risk to his life. An urgent surgical intervention was required to prevent complications such as intestinal perforation or blockage.

Dr. Alaa Al-Siyouti, Head of the General Surgery, Oncology, and Laparoscopic Surgery Department, confirmed that the surgery was performed with extreme precision to safely extract the foreign objects while ensuring the digestive system remained intact. The patient was also referred to a psychiatric consultant for a treatment plan to prevent recurrence. After completing the necessary follow-up and treatment, he was discharged in good condition.

The surgical team was led by Dr. Emad Ali, Professor of General Surgery and Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal Surgery, and included Dr. Ashraf El-Deek, Dr. Ahmed Omar Ragheb, Dr. Adel Ashraf, and Dr. Hossam Mohamed Al-Arabi, along with anesthesiologists and nursing staff.
