Egypt Daily News – Al-Azhar Al-Sharif is organizing a grand celebration today, Friday, corresponding to the 7th of Ramadan, 1446 AH, marking the 1,085th Hijri anniversary of the establishment of Al-Azhar Mosque, which falls on the seventh of the blessed month of Ramadan each year.

The event will be attended by Dr. Mohamed Al-Duwaini, Deputy of Al-Azhar; Dr. Ahmed Omar Hashem, a member of the Council of Senior Scholars; Dr. Salama Dawood, President of Al-Azhar University; Dr. Mohamed El-Gendy, Secretary-General of the Islamic Research Academy; along with a number of senior scholars and leaders of Al-Azhar.

The celebration includes a variety of activities and events, starting immediately after Friday prayers. These aim to introduce the history of Al-Azhar Mosque, its scientific and educational institutions, its prominent scholars and leaders, and Al-Azhar’s historical and contemporary stances on issues concerning the Muslim Ummah. The event will also feature official speeches from senior scholars and leaders of Al-Azhar, a documentary on the history of Al-Azhar Mosque, and conclude with a communal iftar for worshippers.

In May 2018, the Supreme Council of Al-Azhar, under the leadership of Grand Imam Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, decided to designate the anniversary of Al-Azhar Mosque’s inauguration on the 7th of Ramadan in the year 361 AH as an annual day of celebration to commemorate its founding.
