Egypt Daily News – His Eminence, the Grand Imam Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Sheikh of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, today at the Al-Azhar headquarters, received Joseph Aoun, President of the Lebanese Republic, to discuss ways to enhance joint cooperation and address the challenges facing the region.

His Eminence the Grand Imam welcomed the Lebanese president and his accompanying delegation, affirming that “Lebanon resides in the heart of every Arab and every Muslim. We follow its news continuously and deeply appreciate the difficult circumstances you are enduring. We pray to God to grant you success in uniting the Lebanese people, liberating Lebanese territories, and preserving its unity.” He highlighted Lebanon’s distinction in its diversity and coexistence among different sects.

For his part, the Lebanese president expressed his happiness at this first visit to Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and his appreciation for the Grand Imam’s stances, stating: “We follow your vision and positions in serving humanity and combating extremism. Today, the world is in dire need of wise leaders like you. We thank you for your noble stance in facilitating matters for Lebanese students during the hardships they faced and welcoming them to complete their studies at Al-Azhar University. This is nothing new for Al-Azhar, the beacon of knowledge that has always opened its doors to all Lebanese.”

President Joseph Aoun Invites Sheikh Al-Azhar to Visit Lebanon and Reopen the Al-Azhar Institute in Beirut

The Lebanese president extended a formal invitation to His Eminence the Grand Imam to visit Lebanon and reopen the Al-Azhar Institute in Beirut, which had ceased operations due to Lebanon’s difficult circumstances. Sheikh Al-Azhar welcomed the gracious invitation, affirming his readiness to accept it at the earliest opportunity and Al-Azhar’s commitment to resuming the institute’s operations, providing it with highly qualified scholars, as well as necessary books and authentic Al-Azhar curricula.

The meeting also touched on the importance of the historic “Document on Human Fraternity” signed by Sheikh Al-Azhar and Pope Francis, as well as the practical steps taken by Al-Azhar to engage with religious and cultural institutions worldwide. The discussion highlighted the significant role of Al-Azhar’s key documents in promoting “full citizenship” and rejecting the term “minorities.”
