Egypt Daily News – On Sunday, US President Joe Biden pardoned his son Hunter, who faces charges of weapons violations and tax evasion.
Biden said in a statement published by the White House: “Since the day I took office, I have affirmed that I will not interfere in the decisions of the Department of Justice, and I have kept my promise even as I watched my son being selectively and unfairly prosecuted.”
He added: “No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach a conclusion other than that he was targeted only because he is my son – and this is wrong.”
He said, “Hunter was subjected to attempts to break his resolve, even though he had been free of addiction for five and a half years, even as he was subjected to constant attacks and selective prosecutions.”
Hunter was accused of lying about his drug use when filling out a federally required purchase form while purchasing a gun in 2018.
During closing arguments, prosecutors told jurors that there was “overwhelming” evidence against Hunter Biden, and that he chose to lie and violate the law.
But Biden’s defense attorney, Abby Lowell, said prosecutors lacked evidence in much of their arguments, and instead used “circumstantial evidence to try to direct the jury’s focus away from the whole picture.”
“A perversion of justice.” Trump comments on Biden’s pardon of his son
For his part, US President-elect Donald Trump criticized President Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son, accused in weapons and tax cases, and described the decision as a “flagrant violation and distortion of justice.”
In a post on his “Truth Social” platform, Trump wondered why the presidential pardon issued by his predecessor did not include people who were imprisoned following the events of the storming of the Capitol building in January 2021.
Trump wrote: “Does Joe’s pardon for Hunter include the people who were detained in the events of January 6th, and who have now been imprisoned for years? “It is a blatant violation and perversion of justice!”
