Egypt Daily News – US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement Tuesday that the United States “will fully recognize and support” the new Syrian government chosen by the Syrian people, which adheres to four main principles.

This is the first explicit pledge of recognition from the United States after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime this week.

Blinken said in a statement: “The United States affirms its full support for the Syrian-led political transition. This transition must lead to credible, inclusive, non-sectarian governance that meets international standards of transparency and accountability, consistent with the principles of UN Security Council Resolution 2254.”

He added, “The transition process and the new government must also commit to clear commitments to fully respect minority rights, facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid to all those in need, prevent Syria from being used as a base for terrorism or threaten its neighbors, and ensure that any stockpiles of chemical or biological weapons are secured and safely destroyed.” Blinken called on “all countries” to “support a comprehensive and transparent process and refrain from external interference.”

“The United States will fully recognize and support the future Syrian government resulting from this process,” Blinken said. “We stand ready to provide all appropriate support to all diverse communities and constituencies in Syria.”

This comes at a time when Mohamed al-Bashir announced his assignment to form the new Syrian transitional government until next March, after the fall of the regime of ousted President Bashar al-Assad.
