Egypt Daily News – Arab foreign ministers held a closed session in Cairo on Monday ahead of the emergency Arab League summit on Tuesday, which is dedicated to discussing the plan for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip following U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal.
Arab leaders or their representatives are set to discuss an Egyptian proposal regarding the Gaza Strip during the summit on March 4.
Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi participated in the preparatory ministerial meeting for the extraordinary session.
He and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aty held a meeting on Monday, on the eve of the summit’s commencement. According to sources, the meeting aimed to prepare for the upcoming summit on Tuesday.
On Sunday, the Egyptian Foreign Minister announced that Egypt is awaiting the presentation of the plan to Arab leaders at the extraordinary summit.
List of Attendees
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who, according to the WAFA news agency, arrived in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on Monday to participate in the summit on Tuesday.
Kuwait will be represented at the summit by Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.
The Bahraini Royal Court announced that King Hamad bin Isa will depart for Cairo on Monday, leading his country’s delegation to attend the summit.
Iraqi President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid arrived in the Egyptian capital on Monday to represent Iraq at the summit.
Lebanese media sources reported that Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun, who is currently visiting Saudi Arabia, will leave for Cairo early Tuesday to participate.
Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani arrived in Cairo on Monday to take part in the summit.
List of Absentees
On Monday, the Tunisian Foreign Ministry announced that President Kais Saied had assigned Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti to head the Tunisian delegation at the summit. The statement did not specify a particular reason for the Tunisian president’s absence.
On Sunday, Algeria announced that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune would not be attending the summit. The Algerian News Agency, citing a well-informed source, reported that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune decided not to personally attend the summit and assigned Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf to represent Algeria.
The same source stated that the decision was made “due to the imbalances and shortcomings in the preparatory process for this summit, as it was monopolized by a small and limited group of Arab countries that single-handedly prepared the summit’s outcomes in Cairo without any coordination with the rest of the Arab countries, all of whom are concerned with the Palestinian cause.”
Awaiting Confirmation
There has been no news yet regarding the delegations representing Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Morocco, or Syria.
The head of the Syrian Transitional Administration, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, received an invitation from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to participate in the summit. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani has already arrived at the headquarters of the Arab League on the second day for the preparatory session.
Additionally, Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, received an official invitation from the Egyptian president.
As for Morocco’s King Mohammed VI, who usually delegates his Crown Prince, brother, Prime Minister, or Foreign Minister to attend Arab summits, his attendance or absence has not yet been confirmed.
Meanwhile, the Moroccan Royal Court announced on Thursday that King Mohammed VI is undergoing functional rehabilitation sessions following surgery on his left shoulder. It explained that this rehabilitation process is accompanied by “some constraints and difficulties related to certain movements and positions, such as difficulties in sitting for long periods or standing up.”
