International Court of Justice orders the immediate cessation of Israeli operations in Rafah

Egypt daily News - On Friday, the United Nations International Court of Justice ordered Israel to stop its military operation in Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip.

Judge Nawaf Salam, President of the International Court of Justice, said: “Israel must immediately stop its military attack and any other action in Rafah that may harm the Palestinian population of Gaza and lead to its complete or partial physical destruction.”

Salam announced the court’s vote in favor of issuing an order to open the Rafah crossing and ensure the entry of aid into the Gaza Strip, among a number of other decisions voted on by the court.

The court asked Israel to submit a report after a month on its commitment to implementing the orders of “international justice,” according to Judge Salam. The court held a public session at 9 a.m. Eastern time at Al-Salam Palace in The Hague, where Judge Nawaf Salam read the court order.

Media quoted the President of the International Court of Justice as saying: “South Africa called on the court to exercise its jurisdiction and impose emergency measures to stop the war.” South Africa accused Israel of using forced evacuation orders in the city "to endanger the lives of civilians instead of protecting them."

On May 10, South Africa submitted an urgent request to the International Court of Justice to take additional measures in the genocide case against Israel. Israel had responded to South Africa's accusations before the International Court of Justice regarding the escalation of Israeli military attacks in Gaza.
