Sunak informs Netanyahu that escalation in the Middle East is not in anyone’s interest

EgyptDailyNews - British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak told his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, that escalation in the Middle East is not in anyone's interest, during a phone call after Britain helped Israel repel a direct Iranian air attack on Saturday.

According to Reuters, Sunak’s office said in a statement about the call that Sunak “stressed that a major escalation is not in anyone’s interest, and that it will only exacerbate insecurity in the Middle East.” “This is a moment in which calm must prevail.”

Sunak said before Parliament (Monday) that the G7 countries are working on a package of coordinated measures against Iran after its missile and drone attack on Israel in response to what is believed to be an Israeli bombing of its embassy in Damascus.

Italy, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the G7, said it is open to imposing new sanctions on individuals involved in actions against Israel.

A British government spokesman said: “The Prime Minister said that Iran has made a serious miscalculation, is becoming increasingly isolated globally, and that the G7 is coordinating a diplomatic response.”
