Egypt Daily News – As the conflict in the Gaza Strip enters its second year, tensions in the West Bank are escalating, prompting urgent calls for a ceasefire from regional leaders.

President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Jordanian King Abdullah II recently emphasized the need for an immediate and comprehensive truce during a phone conversation.

Their dialogue highlighted the risks posed by ongoing Israeli military actions and violation incidents in the West Bank, which could further destabilize the region.

Ambassador Ahmed Fahmy, speaking on behalf of the Egyptian presidency, articulated concerns about the broadening impacts of the conflict on regional security and international peace.

Both leaders denounced efforts to displace Palestinians and reiterated the commitment to support the Palestinian people’s rights, emphasizing the establishment of an independent state based on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

This diplomatic push coincides with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Egypt, where he aims to engage in strategic discussions and promote efforts towards a ceasefire in Gaza. Meanwhile, Hamas has reiterated its stance for a ceasefire, demanding a full withdrawal of Israeli troops, ending restrictions on displaced persons, and a comprehensive cessation of hostilities.

Efforts led by Egypt to mediate a ceasefire and facilitate prisoner exchanges have yet to yield successful results, while violence in the West Bank has surged.

Since last October, numerous reports indicate that Israeli operations have resulted in the deaths of over 700 Palestinians and injuries to thousands more, alongside the arrest of more than 10,700 individuals.

The situation remains dire, with ongoing humanitarian concerns and a call for immediate international attention to prevent further escalation.
