Wifi calling

Egypt Daily News – Telecommunications companies in Egypt are currently testing “Wi-Fi calling” in preparation for its launch, expected by year’s end, according to sources.

The four major mobile operators in the country—Vodafone Egypt, Orange and state-owned Telecom Egypt—submitted their proposals for the service to the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority last year to establish the necessary regulatory and operational guidelines.

Wi-Fi calling allows users to make traditional mobile calls using a Wi-Fi connection rather than relying on cellular networks, thus facilitating calls via a landline internet connection.

This service aims to improve signal strength in homes and address poor coverage in densely populated areas and taller buildings. Importantly, the pricing for Wi-Fi calling will align with standard mobile call rates according to the user’s billing plan.

The introduction of Wi-Fi calling comes as competition intensifies in Egypt’s mobile market, which is experiencing high saturation levels. Notably, the cost of mobile calls in Egypt is among the lowest in the Middle East.
