Egypt welcomes the establishment of a UN envoy for water

Egypt Daily News – The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign affairs issued a statement that Egypt welcomed the decision of the United Nations Secretary-General on September 13, 2024, to establish the position of UN Special Envoy for Water and announced that Indonesia’s Foreign Minister, Ms. Retno Marsudi.

She will assume this high-level UN position at the beginning of November 2024. Egypt, in partnership with Germany, had led an extensive initiative to prepare for the United Nations Water Conference in 2023.

This initiative successfully garnered support from 151 countries with the aim of establishing the position of UN Water Envoy to assist member states, particularly water-scarce countries, in addressing the challenges of achieving the sixth Sustainable Development Goal related to water.

The decision by the UN Secretary-General to create this UN position is a culmination of Egypt’s efforts to enhance multilateral work in response to emerging challenges.

Egypt looks forward to strengthening cooperation with the new UN envoy to achieve the goals of the 2030 agenda, in the face of water scarcity, and in light of the significant efforts made by the state for the prudent management of water resources and enhancing transboundary cooperation in accordance with international law.
