France announces its position on “Netanyahu’s immunity” against the ICC arrest warrant

Egypt Daily News – The French Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is subject to immunity rules that apply to states that are not members of the International Criminal Court.

In a statement regarding the ICC’s arrest warrant against Netanyahu, the Foreign Ministry said that France would fulfill its international obligations, including cooperating with the ICC, noting at the same time that it “cannot be required under this cooperation to act in an inappropriate manner.” consistent with its obligations under international law with regard to the immunities of states not party to the International Criminal Court.”

The ministry further noted that “such immunities apply to Prime Minister Netanyahu and other relevant ministers and will be taken into account.”

Although it repeated that it would implement its obligations under international law, France did not clarify whether it would arrest Netanyahu if he traveled to the country.

The Foreign Ministry’s statement comes on the day the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah, brokered by France and the United States, enters into force.
