Egypt Daily News – You will need to install the “Telephony” application and follow 4 easy steps. The Egyptian Customs Authority, in cooperation with the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, launched the “Telephony” application for iPhone and Android devices, to register mobile phones coming from abroad.
The application aims to record the data of mobile devices imported for personal use, so that they only work for 90 days with the owner, after which they can be stopped or the customs duties imposed on them be paid.
The customs duties specified for imported phones amount to 38.5% of the phone price. The user is entitled to one phone for personal use, while customs duties are imposed on any other phone.
The application was linked to the database of the Egypt Digital Gateway platform, so that once registered on the “Telefony” application, the owner of the phone is identified through the mobile line used on the phone.
A text message will be sent to smuggled phones that are not registered on the application, demanding payment of the prescribed customs duties within 90 days. In the event of non-payment, the phones that do not pay the duties will be suspended.
