Egypt Daily News – The spokesperson for Tehran’s City Council, Alireza NadAli, stated that the name of Khaled Islambouli Street will be changed, and alternative names have been proposed. In a statement to Tasnim News Agency’s social affairs correspondent regarding the renaming of a street in Tehran’s District 6, NadAli explained that the decision came as a result of full coordination with Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The matter of changing the name of Khaled Islambouli Street, also known as “Al-Wozaraa” (The Ministers) was discussed by the street naming committee, and several alternative names were suggested.
He added: “The established procedure is that after the naming committee approves a new name, it is presented to the City Council’s general assembly for a vote. Once approved, the municipality implements the decision.” The spokesperson confirmed that the proposed name changes for Khaled Islambouli Street will be presented to the council next week.
According to Tasnim News Agency, unofficial reports suggest that one of the names proposed by the committee is “Martyr Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.”
It is worth noting that Khaled Islambouli was the main assassin in the assassination of the late President Anwar Sadat in 1981. Naming the street after Sadat’s assassin has been one of the key obstacles to restoring Egyptian-Iranian relations.
Recently, Egyptian-Iranian relations have witnessed notable improvement. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has visited Cairo multiple times and met with senior Egyptian officials, including President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
During his visit, the Iranian official toured the Khan El-Khalili area, visited the Al-Hussein district where he performed Maghrib prayers, and dined at the Naguib Mahfouz restaurant, actions considered unprecedented in the history of Iran-Egypt relations in recent years.
