Reports have emerged suggesting that early steps have been taken toward a potential transfer of Egyptian star Mohamed Salah to the Saudi Pro League, with his agent, Ramy Abbas, beginning exploratory discussions ahead of the upcoming season.
According to media reports, officials from the Saudi Pro League have monitored Salah’s situation for several seasons, viewing the Liverpool winger as one of their top long-term targets. However, the Egypt international had previously opted to remain in England, extending his contract with Liverpool following an outstanding 2024–2025 campaign in which he remained a central figure for the club.
The situation appears to have shifted in recent months after a disappointing season for Liverpool, accompanied by a noticeable dip in Salah’s individual output. Tensions reportedly surfaced in December when Salah publicly criticized his coach after being left on the bench, fueling speculation about his future at Anfield. Although the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations offered a temporary pause in the debate, questions resurfaced following his return, despite Salah regaining a starting role under Dutch head coach Arne Slot. While he has remained a regular presence in the lineup, he has yet to rediscover his trademark scoring consistency.
French outlet Foot Mercato reported on Tuesday that Salah’s agent is currently in talks with Saudi club Al-Ittihad. The report suggested that, unlike last year, Salah is now more open to the idea of moving to the Saudi Pro League, a development that could satisfy all parties involved. Liverpool would be positioned to secure a substantial transfer fee, while the decision to leave would stem from the player’s own willingness rather than contractual pressure.
Al-Ittihad’s interest comes at a time of significant squad changes for the Jeddah-based club. During the winter transfer window, the club lost French stars Karim Benzema, who moved to Al-Hilal, and N’Golo Kanté, who joined Turkish side Fenerbahçe. Midfielder Fabinho is also approaching the final months of his contract, set to expire in June, while winger Moussa Diaby has been linked with a possible move to Inter Milan.
Against this backdrop, Al-Ittihad is seeking a high-profile signing to reinforce its squad and maintain competitiveness at the top of the Saudi league. Securing Salah, one of the most recognizable players in world football, would represent a major statement of intent and align with the league’s broader strategy of attracting global stars.
While no official offers have been confirmed, the reported talks mark a notable shift in Salah’s stance and add momentum to speculation that a move to Saudi Arabia could become a realistic option in the coming months.
