Egypt Daily News – The International Olympic Committee (IOC) General Assembly, during its 144th meeting currently held in Costa Navarino, Greece, has officially approved the inclusion of boxing in the sports program for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28).

The decision came after a unanimous vote by all members to recognize the new Global Boxing Federation, which includes 88 national federations. This ensures boxing’s place in the upcoming Olympics after a period of uncertainty regarding its future. Notably, the Egyptian Boxing Federation is headed by Major General Magdy El-Louzy.

The Egyptian Boxing Federation has high hopes for a strong return to Olympic competition, aiming to secure a medal in the Los Angeles Games.

Aya Medany Participates in IOC General Assembly Meetings

Meanwhile, Egyptian MP and IOC member Aya Medany is attending the General Assembly meetings, where a new IOC president is set to be elected today through a secret ballot. The election will determine the successor to current president Thomas Bach, whose term ends on June 23, 2025.

Aya Medany is the first Egyptian woman to win independent membership in the IOC, granting her voting rights in the election that will shape the future of the organization’s leadership.

The race for the IOC presidency is highly competitive, with seven candidates vying for the position. Leading contenders include Prince Faisal bin Al Hussein, President of the Jordan Olympic Committee, and Frenchman David Lappartient, President of the International Cycling Union. Other prominent candidates are Swedish-British Johan Eliasch, President of the International Ski Federation, and Spanish IOC Vice President Juan Antonio Samaranch.

Zimbabwe’s Minister of Sport, Kirsty Coventry, is the only female candidate in the race, alongside British Sebastian Coe, President of World Athletics, and Japanese Morinari Watanabe, President of the International Gymnastics Federation.

This election officially holds significant importance, as the IOC plays a crucial role in leading and developing the global Olympic movement. The newly elected president will serve an eight-year term, shaping the future of the Olympic Games.
