Pope Leo XIV has pushed back against criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, stating that he has “no fear” of the White House and intends to continue speaking openly about global conflicts and peace.

The pope made the remarks while traveling to Algeria, where he began a multi-country tour of Africa. He told reporters that his role is guided by faith rather than politics, and that he would not be silenced by political pressure.

Direct Response to Trump Comments

The exchange follows a public dispute after Trump criticized the pope on social media, describing him as “weak on crime” and questioning his approach to foreign policy.

Trump also urged the pontiff to focus on religious leadership rather than political issues, saying his comments were damaging the Catholic Church.

In response, Pope Leo rejected the idea that his statements are political in nature.

“I Am Not Here to Play Politics”

The pope stressed that his interventions are rooted in religious teaching and moral responsibility, not political alignment.

He said his mission is to speak on suffering and conflict around the world, adding that “the message of the Gospel cannot be separated from the reality of war and human suffering.”

He also rejected criticism that he is engaging in political debate with world leaders, saying he has no intention of entering a confrontation with Trump.

Continued Calls for Peace

Since the beginning of his papacy in 2025, Pope Leo XIV has consistently focused on global conflicts, including wars in Ukraine, Sudan, and tensions across the Middle East.

He has repeatedly called for negotiations and an end to violence, warning that escalating wars are deepening global instability and civilian suffering.

During a recent vigil at the Vatican, he urged an end to global conflict, saying that violence is never justified and that diplomacy must prevail.

Tension Over Public Role

The pope’s growing visibility on international issues has increasingly placed him at the center of global political debate, particularly as he continues to comment on wars involving major world powers.

Despite criticism, he said he will continue to advocate for dialogue, reconciliation, and peace efforts, stressing that “someone must speak for those who are suffering.”
