Egypt Daily News – Presidents Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt and Nikos Christodoulides of Cyprus witnessed the signing of the first two agreements between their countries to commence the development of Cyprus’ natural gas discoveries using Egyptian infrastructure. The signing took place today in Cairo during the opening of the Egypt International Energy Conference, EGYPS 2025.

These agreements align with the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum’s strategy to transform Egypt into a regional hub for natural gas trade and distribution. This includes receiving gas produced from Eastern Mediterranean discoveries, directing it to the local market, and re-exporting it to Europe.

The first agreement was signed by Engineer Karim Badawi, Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources; George Papanastasiou, Cyprus’ Minister of Energy, Commerce, and Industry; and Claudio Descalzi, CEO of the Italian company Eni.

The second agreement was signed by Engineer Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources; George Papanastasiou, Minister of Energy, Commerce, and Industry of Cyprus; and Clay Neff, President of Chevron’s Global Exploration and Production division.

These agreements mark a significant step in strengthening energy cooperation between Egypt and Cyprus. They represent the beginning of developing Cyprus’ gas discoveries using Egyptian facilities, while negotiations continue to bring more Cypriot gas to Egypt.
