Egypt Daily News – President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received today Dubravka Šuica, the European Union Commissioner for Mediterranean Affairs, in the presence of Dr. Badr Abdel Aty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Egyptians Abroad.

The official spokesperson for the Presidency stated that the president highlighted the establishment of the new EU Commissioner position for Mediterranean Affairs as a positive step that will enhance cooperation between the European Union and Mediterranean countries. He emphasized the momentum in Egypt-EU relations, particularly after being elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership in March 2024, stressing the need for joint efforts to implement the pillars of this partnership.

Ambassador Mohamed El-Shinawy, the spokesperson, added that the meeting also addressed the importance of cooperation on migration, underscoring the necessity of a comprehensive approach linking migration with development, promoting legal migration, and tackling the root causes of irregular migration.

The spokesperson further noted that the EU commissioner was keen to hear President El-Sisi’s perspective on developments in Gaza, including Egypt’s efforts in implementing the ceasefire agreement, facilitating the exchange of hostages and detainees, delivering humanitarian aid, and ensuring the swift commencement of Gaza’s reconstruction without displacing Palestinians. The European official expressed the EU’s appreciation for these efforts, affirming the importance of supporting initiatives to restore calm, achieve stability, and establish a Palestinian state as the only guarantee for lasting peace in the region.

The meeting also included an exchange of views on developments in Libya, Sudan, and Syria, with an emphasis on the necessity of concerted efforts to achieve stability and safeguard the well-being of the people in these countries.

The spokesperson stated that the EU official reaffirmed the importance of EU-Egypt relations, highlighting Egypt’s pivotal role in maintaining regional security and stability. She also expressed the EU’s support for Egypt’s efforts in this regard and emphasized the need to enhance trade and investment cooperation to align with the growing political momentum in Egypt-EU relations.
