Somaliland closes the Egyptian library and requests its employees to leave

Egypt Daily News – The Somaliland government foreign minister confirmed that his country’s government has decided to permanently close the “Egyptian Cultural Library” in the capital, Hargeisa, “due to serious security concerns.”

In a new escalation due to the deployment of Egyptian forces to Somalia, the separatist government of Somaliland has decided to close the Egyptian library on its territory and has demanded that its staff leave the country within 72 hours.

The Foreign Minister of the Somaliland government, Dr. Essa Kayd, announced that his government has decided to permanently close the “Egyptian Cultural Library” in the capital, Hargeisa, “due to serious security concerns,” adding that all employees have been notified to leave the country within 72 hours.

Kaid also revealed that the memorandum of understanding between Somaliland and Ethiopia has been finalized, indicating that the official legal agreement is imminent.

The minister emphasized his country’s concerns regarding the deployment of Egyptian forces in Somalia, warning that these forces “could contribute to escalating proxy conflicts in the region,” as he described.

Ethiopia, had criticized Cairo for sending military equipment to Somalia.
