Mimi El Sherbini has passed away

Egypt Daily News – It is with great sadness that the Egyptian sports scene lost one of its most prominent symbols in the world of sports commentary, Captain Mohamed Abdel Latif El-Sherbiny, known as “Mimi El-Sherbiny,” who passed away today, Monday, January 20, 2025, at the age of 86 years.

Captain Ahmed Shubeir, the former goalkeeper of Al-Ahly and the Egyptian national team, mourned him through his official account on the “X” platform, saying: “The great commentator icon, Mimi El-Sherbiny, has passed away. We belong to God and to Him we shall return.”

Mimi El-Sherbiny, born on July 26, 1938, is considered an athlete who combined the skill of a player with the passion of a commentator. His star shone as a prominent football player before he became one of the most famous sports commentators in Egyptian history.

Mimi El-Sherbiny began his football career in the ranks of the Egyptian Cairene Club in 1953, and then he was discovered by Abdel Moneim El-Bakal, the Al-Ahly Club’s scout, to include him in the ranks of the Red Castle.

Mimi El-Sherbiny played for Al-Ahly Club for more than 14 years, specifically from the 1957-1958 season until his retirement from playing in the 1970-1971 season. During this golden period, he achieved many achievements with the Ahly Club, most notably winning the Egyptian League Shield four times and the Egypt Cup three times. He also represented the Egyptian military team, adding other achievements to his sporting record.

Mimi El-Sherbiny’s contributions were not limited to the playing field as a player, but rather extended to include the field of training, as he coached the United Arab Emirates national football team in 1975, and also led the Damietta Ghazl Club technically.

However, the most important and influential stage in Mimi El-Sherbini’s career, after playing and training, was his entry into the world of sports commentary. In February 1976, Mimi El-Sherbiny passed the radio test with flying colors, becoming one of the brightest and most famous Egyptian football commentators in history.

It is noteworthy that Mimi El-Sherbiny played a prominent role with the Egyptian national team, as he contributed to achieving the African Cup of Nations title in 1959, and was even able to score a decisive goal against the Ethiopian national team in the semi-finals of the tournament, in the match that ended with a major victory for the Egyptian national team with a score of 4. -0.
