Egypt Daily News – Sultanate of Oman announces that the United States and Yemen’s Houthi movement have reached a ceasefire agreement, Oman announced on Tuesday, stating that the deal will help secure “freedom of navigation” in the Red Sea, where the Houthis have previously targeted commercial shipping.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that following recent discussions and communications conducted by the Sultanate of Oman with the United States and the relevant authorities in Sana’a, Yemen, aimed at de-escalation, these efforts have resulted in an agreement on a ceasefire between the two sides.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the United States would halt airstrikes against Yemen’s Houthi rebels following their agreement to cease disrupting key maritime shipping routes in the Middle East.
“They asked us to stop the bombing and said they won’t target our ships anymore,” Trump stated from the Oval Office during a joint appearance with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. “I’m taking them at their word, and the bombing of the Houthis will stop immediately.” He added that the Houthis had informed the U.S. they no longer wished to continue the conflict and had effectively “capitulated.”
Going forward, neither party will target the other, including American ships in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb, in a way that ensures freedom of navigation and the smooth flow of international commercial shipping.
The Sultanate of Oman expressed its gratitude to both parties for their constructive approach that led to this welcomed outcome and expressed hope that it will lead to further progress on various regional issues in the pursuit of justice, peace, and prosperity for all.
