Egypt Daily News – Swiss energy and commodities trading firm BGN has marked two significant milestones in its liquefied natural gas (LNG) operations, highlighting its growing role in the global energy market. The company recently completed its first physical LNG delivery in Germany and secured a supplier position in Egypt’s strategic LNG procurement program.

BGN’s entry into the physical LNG market was formalized with the offloading of its first LNG cargo at Germany’s Mukran LNG terminal. The delivery was made using the Celsius Gandhinagar, a 2024-built LNG carrier with a capacity of 180,000 cubic meters. The vessel was constructed by Samsung Heavy Industries and chartered by BGN specifically for such operations.

The delivery, referred to in industry circles as “touching the ice” due to the LNG’s temperature of -160°C, marks BGN’s operational debut in physical LNG trading. According to the company, this step represents a significant expansion of its global energy portfolio and a strategic advancement in its LNG ambitions.

Mukran LNG, operated by Deutsche ReGas, has reported a record-breaking quarterly performance, making it the top-performing LNG terminal in Germany during the period. BGN’s delivery is expected to further enhance the terminal’s role in bolstering Germany’s energy resilience.

Meanwhile, in the Middle East, BGN has been selected as a key supplier in Egypt’s newly launched LNG procurement initiative. The program, which the company describes as “historic,” aims to reinforce Egypt’s energy security by addressing growing domestic consumption and rising electricity demand.

While BGN did not disclose further details of the agreement, the initiative aligns with Egypt’s broader strategy to ensure stable energy supplies. This includes recent investments in floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), with the second such unit arriving in May.

Egypt’s energy sector has seen a flurry of activity in recent months beyond LNG. Notably, Italian energy company Eni completed drilling at the Zohr 6 well, adding approximately 60 million cubic feet of gas per day to the country’s production. The drilling was carried out using the Saipem 10000 drillship.

With its dual accomplishments in Germany and Egypt, BGN is positioning itself as a growing player in the LNG landscape, reinforcing both European and Middle Eastern energy security at a time of global supply shifts.
