Egypt Daily News – The National Dialogue has wrapped up its discussions concerning the challenges of pretrial detention and the broader context of criminal justice in Egypt.
The Board of Trustees presented the resulting recommendations to President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. These discussions, which took place on July 23, featured a diverse range of participants, including political figures, legal experts, representatives from various parties, and members of human rights organizations, as well as the Presidential Pardon Committee.
The dialogue encompassed significant issues such as the duration of pretrial detention, alternatives to detention, handling cases with multiple crimes, compensation for wrongful detention, and procedural measures related to pretrial practices.
The National Dialogue identified pretrial detention and criminal justice as priority topics in its early sessions, highlighting the importance of addressing these critical issues.
A total of 24 recommendations emerged from the discussions, with consensus on 20. The remaining four recommendations contained differing opinions on their implementation.
Throughout the sessions, which spanned over 12 hours and involved 120 speakers, participants contributed various proposals, reflecting a broad spectrum of views.
The National Dialogue’s Board of Trustees emphasized the seriousness and openness of the discussions, ensuring that all opinions and suggestions were considered during the formulation of recommendations.
The proceedings adhered to established regulations, incorporating input from plenary sessions and drafting committees, ultimately resulting in a collaborative outcome presented to the Board of Trustees.
The Board expressed appreciation for President El-Sisi’s commitment to fostering a national dialogue across political, youth, civil society, and union factions, stating that these efforts aim to build a more inclusive and united republic.
The overarching message of the dialogue is that diverse opinions should not hinder a collective commitment to the nation’s wellbeing.
