Egypt Daily News – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently visited the Sumy region, which borders the Russian province of Kursk, amidst an ongoing offensive by Ukrainian forces that began on August 6.

This large-scale attack has seen Ukrainian troops make unexpected advances into Russian territory, reportedly claiming control over several towns in Kursk.

During his visit, Zelensky met with military officials, including Chief of Staff Oleksandr Sirsky. He announced that Ukrainian forces have captured additional territory and have “reinforced the exchange box,” implying that they have taken more Russian soldiers as potential bargaining chips for future prisoner exchanges.

The Ukrainian government has articulated several objectives for this offensive, including the establishment of a “buffer zone” within Russia, pursuing an end to the conflict under “fair” conditions, and wearing down Russian military forces.

Despite the progress in Kursk, Ukrainian forces are reportedly facing challenges in the Donbass region, particularly in Donetsk, where Russian troops continue to gain ground.

Zelensky commented on ongoing defensive strategies in key areas within Donbass, emphasizing the need to strengthen their position against Russian advances.

As the conflict enters its third year, Ukraine has escalated its military operations against Russian targets, including a recent attack on Marinovka Airport in the Volgograd region.

Ukrainian intelligence suggests that operations like this are aimed at undermining Russian air superiority. In response, officials in Volgograd reported a drone incident linked to air defense measures, resulting in a fire at a defense ministry facility.

Russia has condemned the attacks, particularly noting casualties in Kursk, where reports indicate significant civilian losses, including at least 31 dead and many more injured, according to TASS news agency.
