“50 million pounds, 3 million dollars, and 15 kilograms of gold”, Details of the theft from Nawal El-Degwi’s villa

Egypt Daily News – The Ministry of the Interior has begun investigating the report submitted by Dr. Nawal El-Degwy, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of October University for Modern Sciences, to the security authorities in Giza.

The report concerns the examination of three large safes inside a villa owned by her in a well-known compound in the October First police precinct. Dr. El-Degwy stated in her official report: “I arrived today, Monday, from Zamalek to retrieve some documents, and I discovered a break-in at the bedroom door inside the villa.

I noticed that the numbers of the safes, which contained money, had been changed, but there was no sign of a break-in.” She added in her report: “The bedroom contains three safes, which hold 50 million Egyptian pounds, 350,000 British pounds, 3 million dollars, and 15 kilograms of gold,” and that she was unable to open the safes to change the codes and locks on all three safes.

Lieutenant General Mohamed El-Sharkawy, Director of the Giza General Investigation Department, received a notification from Lieutenant General Hani Shaarawy, Director of Giza Investigations, about a report received by the Police Emergency Operations Room regarding a theft at a well-known compound in October.

Immediately, Major Mohamed Ragab, Head of the First October Investigations, arrived at the scene, where he met Dr. Nawal El-Degwy, to discuss the change in the numbers of her safes. During questioning, she confirmed that she had gone to the villa that day to retrieve specific documents and was surprised to find that the numbers of the safes, had been altered.

Upon inspecting the scene, it was found that the safes were locked, and efforts are underway to open them in order to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
