Egypt Daily News – The Israeli military has withdrawn its elite 98th Division from the Gaza Strip and is now massing forces near Egypt’s border, signaling a shift in operational priorities amid growing regional tensions.

According to multiple sources, the 98th Division had been heavily engaged in combat operations inside Gaza, particularly in the southern city of Khan Younis and later Rafah. These operations focused on the pursuit of Hamas leaders, and the rescue of hostages. The division is considered one of the Israeli army’s most elite rapid-response units, known for conducting high-intensity ground assaults and urban warfare.

The decision to pull the division from Gaza comes after months of intense fighting. Israeli military officials cited the completion of specific phases of the operation and the need to reposition troops in response to evolving threats. Importantly, two simultaneous developments appear to have influenced this redeployment: concerns over renewed tensions with Hezbollah along the Lebanese border and growing strategic importance of the Egyptian frontier, particularly near the Rafah crossing.

Since the withdrawal, Israel has been reinforcing its military presence along the southern border with Egypt. This build-up is viewed as a precautionary measure in light of recent instability in Sinai, the disruption of gas supplies from Israel to Jordan, and increased regional volatility after the outbreak of direct hostilities between Israel and Iran.

The Israeli side, military analysts suggest that the 98th Division’s withdrawal may be temporary. There are indications that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have conducted drills simulating rapid re-entry into Gaza, suggesting that forces could be redeployed if necessary. Social media users have also pointed to signs that the IDF is maintaining a state of readiness for renewed conflict inside Gaza, despite the public shift of attention to other fronts.

On the northern border, the remainder of the 98th Division is reportedly being sent toward Lebanon, where Hezbollah has stepped up its attacks. Israeli officials are increasingly concerned about the possibility of a full-scale confrontation with the group. The 98th Division’s mobility and experience make it a key asset for rapid deployment in this region.

While thousands of displaced Palestinians have begun to return to areas of Gaza vacated by Israeli troops, the humanitarian situation remains dire. At the same time, the IDF’s movements underscore Israel’s shifting military calculus, preparing for a multi-front scenario involving Hezbollah in the north, Iran-backed militias, and the southern border with Egypt, all while managing domestic and international pressure related to the Gaza war.

The withdrawal of the 98th Division, “the Butchers from Gaza” and redeployment with the 80th “Edom” Division as well, to reinforce the southern section and the border with Egypt, seen as a tactical move by the Israeli military but a threat to Egypt’s security. Why would Israel need foot soldier for the Iran war?
