Thales, the global leader in defence, aerospace, and digital technologies, has expanded its long-standing collaboration with Arab International Optronics (AIO) in a move aimed at bolstering Egypt’s technological sovereignty and positioning the country as a regional hub for high-value, locally produced solutions. The renewed partnership, reported by the African Media Agency (AMA), signals a significant step in Egypt’s drive to advance domestic innovation and export-ready capabilities.

Thales has worked with Egypt for more than five decades, supporting national ambitions for industrial growth and strategic autonomy. The latest expansion builds on this legacy by harnessing the expertise of more than 800 engineers and specialists to deliver “Made in Egypt” technology across both civilian and defence sectors.

The collaboration will broaden work across six key domains, with one of the most prominent initiatives being the establishment of the Thales Academy in Egypt. The academy is designed to develop advanced technical skills within the Egyptian Armed Forces, government bodies, and civilian institutions. Training programs led by Thales experts, will cover critical fields such as optronics, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, telecommunications, and radar systems. The academy will also strengthen academic cooperation between Egyptian and French universities, supporting long-term knowledge exchange.

In defence, the partnership will enhance Egypt’s capabilities in several areas. Thales and AIO plan to upgrade Fire Control Systems (FCS) for heavy armoured vehicles, providing modernized equipment that improves battlefield effectiveness. Remote Controlled Weapon Systems (RCWS) will also receive enhancements, including the integration of laser-guided rocket capabilities into AIO’s locally developed X29 system, leveraging advanced Thales technology.

Surveillance and situational awareness will be reinforced through a suite of combat-proven solutions, including Thales ground radars and Hand-Held Thermal Imagers (HHTI). These systems will be integrated into a unified command-and-control network to enable faster threat detection and identification. A dedicated service centre will be established at AIO’s facilities to support the maintenance and lifecycle management of Thales HHTI systems deployed across Egypt.

The strengthened partnership also extends into the broader supply chain. AIO-manufactured components will be incorporated into Thales’ global production processes, improving the company’s throughput and competitiveness while deepening AIO’s industrial integration and manufacturing capacity.

Taken together, the expanded cooperation is designed to advance Egypt’s ambition to become a regional technology powerhouse, one capable not only of meeting domestic needs, but of exporting advanced, locally engineered systems to markets across Africa, the Middle East, and beyond.
