Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark, has returned to Cairo after completing a two-week medical visit to Austria, during which he underwent a successful surgical procedure and follow-up care. Upon his return, doctors advised him to observe a period of rest and recuperation through the end of February.
Speaking after his arrival at the Papal Residence in Cairo, Pope Tawadros expressed gratitude for the outpouring of concern and goodwill he received during his treatment and recovery. He thanked members of the Holy Synod, including metropolitans, bishops, priests, monks, nuns, deacons, and church servants, as well as Coptic faithful in Egypt and abroad, who reached out through phone calls, messages, and various forms of communication.
The Pope also extended his appreciation to Egyptian state and religious leaders who personally contacted him to convey their support. Among them were President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, the Prime Minister, several cabinet ministers, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Dr. Ahmed El-Tayeb, the Grand Mufti, heads of national institutions, and other prominent public figures. He described these gestures as sincere expressions of national solidarity and goodwill.
Reflecting on his recovery, Pope Tawadros emphasized the spiritual dimension of health, describing it as a divine gift that enables individuals to serve others and contribute positively to society. He offered thanks to God for what he described as continuous care and guidance throughout the medical process.
The Pope arrived at the Papal Residence on Sunday evening, where he was welcomed by members of the Holy Synod. After exchanging greetings, he met with senior clergy in a reception hall, in an atmosphere marked by warmth and relief at his safe return and improving health. During the meeting, he briefed them on the course of his medical treatment, including the circumstances that led to surgical intervention, and reiterated his gratitude for the prayers and support he received.
Pope Tawadros II has led the Coptic Orthodox Church since 2012 and is regarded as a prominent religious figure both within Egypt and internationally. His health has been closely followed by church members, reflecting the central role he plays in guiding one of the world’s oldest Christian communities. Church officials have indicated that scheduled activities will be adjusted during his recovery period in accordance with medical advice.
