Egypt has intensified its diplomatic efforts in recent days in an attempt to contain rising regional tensions and prevent the Middle East from sliding into a wider conflict, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a series of high-level contacts over the past two days with key regional and international actors, including Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and US special envoy Steve Witkoff. The talks focused on de-escalation efforts and ways to curb the growing instability across the region.

Central to the discussions were preparations for a planned meeting between the United States and Iran, expected to take place in the Sultanate of Oman. Abdelatty welcomed the preliminary agreement to hold the talks, describing it as a significant development that Egypt has long worked to achieve through sustained diplomatic engagement. He noted that Cairo has spent weeks laying the groundwork for such an encounter through intensive contacts and coordination, in line with directives from President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.

The Egyptian foreign minister stressed the critical importance of reaching a peaceful and consensual settlement between Washington and Tehran that addresses the concerns of all parties. He emphasized that any agreement should be built on mutual respect and shared interests, warning that failure to defuse tensions risks pushing the region closer to open conflict. Abdelatty called for setting aside differences during what he described as a highly sensitive phase, in order to safeguard regional security and serve the aspirations of regional populations for stability and development.

Abdelatty expressed hope that the anticipated US-Iran meeting would lead to a tangible reduction in tensions and help steer the region toward diplomatic and political solutions. He reiterated Egypt’s long-standing position that military options offer no sustainable answers to the crises facing the Middle East, arguing that diplomacy remains the only viable path to lasting security and stability.

The foreign minister also affirmed that Egypt will continue its active engagement with regional partners, as well as with both the American and Iranian sides, to push for dialogue and political solutions. Egyptian officials see their mediation efforts as part of a broader strategy to prevent further escalation, preserve regional balance, and avoid a slide into prolonged instability.

Cairo’s intensified diplomatic activity reflects growing concern over the accumulation of regional flashpoints, as well as Egypt’s aspiration to play a central role in shaping de-escalation efforts at a moment of heightened uncertainty across the Middle East.
