In a call that underscored growing regional urgency, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held talks on Tuesday with his Sudanese counterpart Mohieddin Salem, focusing on the rapidly deteriorating situation in Sudan and renewed efforts to halt escalation and restore stability in the conflict-stricken country.

Mounting alarm over civilian infrastructure targets The conversation came against the backdrop of intensifying violence, including a strike on Khartoum International Airport that drew sharp condemnation from Cairo. Abdelatty denounced the attack in the strongest terms, describing it as a flagrant violation of international law and international humanitarian law, while warning that targeting civilian infrastructure risks deepening the crisis and prolonging the suffering of the Sudanese population.

Cairo’s red lines on sovereignty and stability Egypt used the call to reiterate what officials describe as a consistent and non-negotiable position: full support for Sudan’s security, territorial integrity, and the preservation of its national institutions. Abdelatty stressed the importance of respecting Sudan’s sovereignty, urging neighboring states to refrain from interference in internal affairs, a message that reflects Cairo’s concern over widening regional entanglements in the conflict.

Pushing for a Sudan-led political solution Beyond immediate de-escalation, Egypt is pressing for a comprehensive political settlement driven by Sudanese ownership. Abdelatty emphasized that any viable path forward must prioritize national interest, halt all forms of escalation, and lead to a political framework capable of delivering security, stability, and long-term development for the Sudanese people.

Diplomatic momentum widens internationally The Egyptian foreign minister also signaled that Cairo is expanding its diplomatic outreach, maintaining active coordination with key international actors, including the United States and multilateral mechanisms often referred to as the international quartet. The goal, according to officials, is twofold: reduce humanitarian suffering on the ground and build momentum toward a sustainable ceasefire and political resolution.

Khartoum signals alignment with Cairo’s stance For his part, Salem expressed Sudan’s appreciation for Egypt’s continued support, praising Cairo’s role in backing Sudan’s unity and stability at both regional and international levels. He also affirmed Sudan’s commitment to ongoing consultation and coordination with Egypt as the crisis evolves, a signal of alignment between the two countries at a moment of heightened uncertainty.

A crisis with no easy exit Despite intensifying diplomatic activity, the situation in Sudan remains volatile, with no immediate breakthrough in sight. Egypt’s messaging in this latest exchange reflects a broader strategy: contain escalation, defend state institutions, and steer the crisis toward a Sudan-led political outcome before further fragmentation takes hold.
