The net foreign assets of the Egyptian banking system increased to 1.378 trillion Egyptian pounds, or approximately 27.965 billion dollars, at the end of June 2026. Data released by the Central Bank of Egypt on Monday shows a steady rise from the 22.9 billion dollars recorded at the end of May. Net foreign assets represent the difference between the banking sector’s total foreign currency assets and its international liabilities, serving as an important indicator of domestic banking liquidity and financial stability.
The overall foreign assets held by the central bank and commercial banks combined stood at 4.939 trillion pounds at the close of June. On the liabilities side, the banking system successfully lowered its total foreign obligations to 3.591 trillion pounds, down from the 3.790 trillion pounds registered at the end of May. This parallel reduction in international liabilities has helped optimize the sector’s financial balance sheet and improve its overall liquidity position.
This growth in net foreign assets coincided with a noticeable strengthening of the Egyptian pound against the United States dollar in official banking channels. The commercial exchange rate shifted from 52.3297 pounds per dollar at the end of May to a firmer 49.2763 pounds per dollar by the end of June.
This currency appreciation automatically adjusted the localized ledger valuations of foreign holdings within the banking system, reducing gross pound figures while expanding the country’s baseline international purchasing power.
Financial analysts note that the steady expansion of foreign assets provides a reliable monetary buffer to support regular international trade and guarantee smooth import transactions for the domestic market. The central bank’s data points to a stabilizing trend across the wider financial sector, supported by consistent tracking methods and strict regulatory oversight.
The Central Bank of Egypt concluded its report by reaffirming its ongoing commitment to transparent financial reporting and standard compliance guidelines across all commercial banking networks.
