Egypt Daily News – The UNHCR has reported a significant rise in the number of Syrian refugees returning to their home country from neighboring countries during the first half of 2024.

Specifically, 4,060 Syrian refugees returned from Jordan alone in the first seven months of 2024, marking a 57% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Overall, a total of 27,091 Syrian refugees have returned from Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, and Iraq within the same timeframe, representing a 35.04% increase compared to 20,061 returns during the first seven months of 2023.

The trend of returns appears variable over the years, with 37,552 Syrian refugees returning in 2023, down from 50,966 in 2022, 35,624 in 2021, 38,235 in 2020, and 94,971 in 2019.

Despite these increases in returns, many Syrian refugees have established new lives and businesses in their host countries and are hesitant about returning to Syria, reflecting a complex interplay between the challenges in their home country and the opportunities available abroad.
