Egypt Daily News – The spokesperson for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Andrea Tenenti, has firmly stated that the force will not withdraw from southern Lebanon in response to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s request for their departure.
Tenenti highlighted the concerning situation for UNIFIL, particularly following multiple attacks by Israeli forces on their positions in the preceding days.
He emphasized that the mission operates at the behest of the United Nations Security Council, not any individual member state, and its presence is crucial for maintaining an international presence in the region.
Tenenti pointed out that these attacks not only violate UN Security Council Resolution 1701 but also international humanitarian law, which mandates respect and protection for peacekeeping forces.
Despite the challenges posed by the security situation, he assured that UNIFIL’s operations in southern Lebanon continue, albeit with restricted movement due to safety concerns.
He reiterated the necessity of adhering to Resolution 1701, which requires the commitment of involved parties to restore stability, the return of the Lebanese army to specific areas, and the cessation of aerial and ground violations.
The full implementation of this resolution is portrayed as essential for resolving ongoing tensions and securing peace in the region.
