Egypt Daily News – British Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced on Sunday that London had opened “diplomatic contacts” with Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, which led the Syrian opposition to end the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on December 8.
Lamy said in statements to the BBC that Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham is still a terrorist organization banned in the United Kingdom, “but we can make diplomatic contacts, so we have diplomatic contacts” aimed at ensuring the establishment of a “representative government” and securing chemical weapons stocks in Syria.
The minister added: “We want to see a representative government and an inclusive government.” “We want to see chemical weapons stockpiles secured, not used, and we want to ensure that the violence does not continue.”
In response to a question about the possibility of removing Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham from the list of terrorist organizations banned in Britain, Lammy said that the group would remain banned, noting that it originated from Al-Qaeda.
“We will judge her based on her actions,” he continued. He declined to make statements about any future ban. He concluded his speech by saying: “But we realize, of course, that this is an important moment for Syria.”
