Egypt Daily News – Al-Ahly Club was crowned the Egyptian Super Cup after an exciting victory over their traditional rival, Zamalek, with a score of 7-6 in penalties, in the final match held at Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium.
The match witnessed intense competition and ended in a goalless draw after the regular and extra time, before the teams resorted to penalty kicks that decided the title in favor of Al Ahly.
The course of the match
Al-Ahly started the match with clear offensive pressure, looking to score an early goal. Hussein El-Shahat was close to scoring in the seventh minute after breaking through against Zamalek’s goalkeeper Mohamed Awaad, but his shot was weak.
The Zamalek response didn’t take long; in the 27th minute, Seif El-Din El-Jaziri scored a goal, but it was disallowed after a VAR review due to offside. The mutual attempts from both sides continued, but without shaking the net, ending the first half in a goalless draw.
In the second half, the situation didn’t change much, as both teams missed several scoring opportunities, the most notable being Akram Tawfik’s chance for Al Ahly and Zizo’s shot, which was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy. The goalkeepers shone and the resolution was delayed, leading both teams to extra time, which also witnessed defensive tenacity from both sides, ultimately resulting in a penalty shootout.

The penalty shootout started excitingly from the beginning, with Al Ahly taking the lead through Mohamed Magdy Afsha, while Abdullah El-Said equalized for Zamalek.

The teams exchanged goals until the ninth penalty, when Hussein El Shahat scored the decisive penalty for Al Ahly, while Omar Jaber missed the last penalty for Zamalek after it hit the crossbar.

Marcel Koller won the Egyptian Super Cup with Al Ahly four times: in 2022 against Zamalek, in May 2023 against Pyramids, in December 2023 against Modern Sport, and in 2024 against Zamalek.
Al-Ahly holds the record for winning the championship, having won its cup fifteen times, while Zamalek has won it four times. Each of the Arab Contractors, Haras El-Hodood, and Tala’ea El-Gaish has won the championship cup once.
