Egypt Daily News – Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Ati and his Lebanese counterpart Abdullah Bouhabib discussed the latest developments on the Lebanese scene in light of the imminent session of the Lebanese Parliament to elect a new president.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister stressed the importance of making unremitting efforts with all national actors to reach a national consensus with exclusive Lebanese ownership to end the presidential vacancy in Lebanon without any external interference.

Lebanon has been witnessing a presidential vacancy crisis since October 2022, the end of the term of former Lebanese President General Michel Aoun, amid the failure of the Lebanese Parliament to agree on the election of a new president of the republic.

Parliament needs the votes of 65 members to elect a new president, and without them the vacuum will remain, which has been repeated several times in the history of Lebanon since its founding.

The Egyptian and Lebanese ministers also exchanged views on the political and security developments in Syria, reaffirming the importance of supporting the will of the brotherly Syrian people and preserving the capabilities, unity and territorial integrity of the Syrian state.

The Egyptian Minister and his Lebanese counterpart stressed the need for the political transition process in Syria to be under pure Syrian national ownership, without external dictates.
