Egypt Daily News – The recent request by the National Unity Government in Libya for Egyptian intelligence officials to leave Libyan territory has drawn sharp criticism from Egyptian officials and commentators.
Mustafa Bakri, an Egyptian parliamentarian and media figure, has expressed bewilderment over the request, arguing that the Dabaiba government lacks legitimacy following a decision by the House of Representatives, which is recognized as the sole legitimate authority in Libya.
Bakri emphasized that the Dabaiba government is infringing upon its mandate and has no grounds to object to Egypt’s involvement in Libyan affairs, underscoring that Egypt engages only with legitimate governance structures.
Ahmed Refaat, a researcher in national security, characterized the government’s request as an emotional reaction that distracts from real issues and highlights a reliance on rhetoric rather than substantive governance.
He defended Egypt’s actions, asserting that the country has cooperated only with officials chosen through a process sanctioned by the Libyan parliament and has consistently respected frameworks established through international agreements and dialogues aimed at resolving Libyan conflicts.
Refaat further argued that emotional responses should not overshadow the importance of collaborative efforts aimed at ensuring the welfare of the Libyan people.
The speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, also reprimanded the National Unity Government’s stance, calling it “irresponsible,” thus highlighting the contentious atmosphere surrounding governance and foreign relations in Libya.
