Egypt is accelerating efforts to strengthen its energy sector, with investments totaling $6.5 billion directed toward exploration, development, and production projects in recent years, according to the country’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.

Speaking at the opening of Egypt International Energy Conference and Exhibition (EGYPS 2026), Minister Karim Badawi said the investments are part of a broader strategy to boost domestic oil and gas output and enhance energy security.

He noted that extensive seismic surveys have been carried out in the Red Sea and Egypt’s Western Desert, aimed at identifying new hydrocarbon reserves and expanding the country’s resource base.

Badawi added that Egypt’s refining capacity currently stands at around 40 million tons of petroleum products annually, covering a significant share of the country’s fuel demand across key sectors.

The announcement came during the ninth edition of EGYPS, one of the region’s leading energy events, which was officially inaugurated in the presence of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

The conference has drawn high-level international participation, including Nikos Christodoulides, alongside ministers, heads of international organizations, and chief executives from major global energy and technology companies.

Widely regarded as a key platform for energy dialogue in North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean, the event highlights Egypt’s growing role as a regional energy hub, as it seeks to attract further investment and deepen cooperation in both traditional and emerging energy sectors.
