Egypt’s first comment after the fall of Bashar al-Assad: A call to the Syrians and an emphasis on support

Egypt Daily News – The Arab Republic of Egypt said that it is following with great interest the change witnessed by the Syrian Arab Republic, stressing its support for the Syrian state and people and its support for Syria’s sovereignty and the unity and integrity of its lands.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt called on all Syrian parties, with all their orientations, to preserve the capabilities of the state and its national institutions, and to give priority to the country’s best interest, by unifying goals and priorities and starting an integrated and comprehensive political process that establishes a new phase of consensus and internal peace, and the restoration of Syria’s regional and international status.

In this context, Egypt also affirmed its continued work with regional and international partners to provide a helping hand and work to end the prolonged suffering of the Syrian people, rebuild and support the safe return of Syrian refugees to their country, and achieve the stability that the brotherly Syrian people deserve.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fled Damascus on a plane and has arrived in Moscow. Estimates varied about the time of his escape, between ten o’clock yesterday evening, Saturday, and midnight Sunday.

Today, Sunday, Syrian state television broadcast a video clip of the Syrian opposition in which it announced the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime and the release of all detainees from prisons.
