President Donald Trump on Wednesday appeared to acknowledge that he cannot run for a third term, despite previously leaving the possibility open. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to South Korea, Trump said, “If you read it, it’s pretty clear. I’m not allowed to run. It’s too bad, but we have a lot of great people.”
Trump has repeatedly discussed the idea of a 2028 presidential bid, but the U.S. Constitution explicitly bars any president from being elected more than twice under the 22nd Amendment. He noted that while he could theoretically run as vice president, he dismissed the idea of a maneuver where an elected president would step aside for him, calling it “too cute.”
Trump-Rubio-Vance Discussion
Vice President JD Vance revealed on the Pod Force One podcast that Trump floated a potential 2028 Republican ticket with Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio about six months ago. Vance stressed that there would be no tension with Rubio and emphasized that the administration’s focus remains on governance rather than political maneuvering.
House Speaker Mike Johnson also commented Tuesday that he does not “see the path” for Trump to seek a third term, reflecting the constitutional restriction.
