Egypt Daily News – On Sunday, March 30, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he was not joking about pursuing a third presidential term, despite the constitutional ban
In a phone interview with NBC, Trump said, “No, I’m not joking. I’m not joking, but it’s too early to think about it.”
He added, “There are, there are ways to do it,” while refraining from providing specific details about those methods.
The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution stipulates that a president can only serve two terms, each lasting four years, whether consecutive or separate.
The 78-year-old billionaire has mentioned multiple times that he might run for a third term, but his recent statement is the most serious in this context.
Amending the U.S. Constitution to allow a third presidential term would require a two-thirds majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, which the Republican Party, to which Trump belongs, does not currently have.
Trump stated that “plans have been presented to him that would allow him to seek re-election.” When asked about a potential scenario in which Vice President Jay D. Vance would run for president and then step aside for Trump, the U.S. president said, “That’s one way.”
He also mentioned that “there are other (ways),” but declined to reveal further details.
If Trump does not turn to Congress for a constitutional amendment, he would need the support of two-thirds of the fifty states to call for a constitutional convention that could propose amendments.
In either case, whether through Congress or the states, he would then need approval from three-quarters of the states. Both methods appear unlikely, given the number of states and congressional seats controlled by Republicans.
In January, days after taking office, Republican Andy Ogles introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives to amend the Constitution to allow presidents to serve three terms.
