The United States has approved more than $2 billion in credit guarantees to support American natural gas exports to Egypt, reflecting growing energy cooperation between the two nations, Reuters reported. The approval comes from the board of the US Export-Import Bank and is aimed at facilitating liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments to Egypt over 2026 and 2027.
The funding is linked to contracts between Hartree Partners and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation, designed to secure the country’s domestic gas supply and meet rising demand. The agreement follows a November announcement by US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau that Egypt had selected Hartree Partners for a gas deal valued at approximately $4 billion, part of a broader strategy to diversify energy sources.
Egyptian imports of American natural gas surged by 257% last year, reaching around 435 billion cubic feet, making the United States the country’s largest supplier during that period. The increase highlights a notable shift in Egypt’s energy import landscape and a growing reliance on US LNG amid regional supply uncertainties.
The initiative is expected to strengthen Egypt’s energy security and support the country’s expanding electricity generation and industrial needs. It also demonstrates the role of international financing in facilitating energy transactions, reducing direct fiscal pressure, and providing flexibility for managing import requirements in an increasingly complex global energy market.
