Egyptians vote overseas

Egypt Daily News – Egyptian embassies and consulates across the globe are ramping up preparations to receive expatriate voters for the 2025 Senate elections, scheduled to take place abroad on Friday and Saturday, August 1 and 2. The National Elections Authority (NEA) of Egypt has officially confirmed these dates and issued a comprehensive set of guidelines to ensure a smooth and transparent electoral process for citizens residing overseas.

As part of their readiness, most embassies have published the NEA’s formal notices, Decisions No. 5 and 6 of 2025 on their websites and social media platforms. These documents inform the public about voting dates and procedures, making it easier for Egyptians abroad to understand their rights and the steps involved in casting their vote. The embassies have also shared detailed logistical information, including the location of polling stations, which will be set up within their diplomatic premises.

Expatriates are urged to participate in this important democratic event and are reminded to bring either a valid national ID card or a biometric Egyptian passport that includes the national ID number. These documents are necessary for verifying voter registration status in the national database.

In a logistical note shaped by global time zones, the first embassy to open its doors for voting will be the Egyptian consulate in Wellington, New Zealand, due to the country’s advanced time zone. Conversely, the last polling station to close will be in Los Angeles, United States.

The Egyptian Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, has called on nationals living in the country to vote at its premises from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on both election days. Similarly, Egypt’s mission in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and other embassies around the world, including in Washington, Berlin, Bern, Pretoria, Athens, and more have launched their respective outreach campaigns to encourage electoral participation.

In the United States, the Egyptian Embassy in Washington issued a public announcement urging community members to engage actively in the elections. The embassy specified that voting will be conducted on August 1 and 2, with a potential runoff election scheduled for August 25 and 26 if required.

Across Europe, the Embassy of Egypt in Switzerland invited Egyptians residing in both Switzerland and Liechtenstein to cast their ballots, while the Berlin embassy extended the same call to Egyptian nationals in Germany. In Greece, the embassy emphasized the importance of this constitutional duty and announced the same two-day window for voting, with clear instructions in the event of a runoff.

In South Africa, the Egyptian Embassy in Pretoria encouraged Egyptian citizens not only in South Africa but also in neighboring Botswana and Lesotho to participate if registered. Polling will take place at the embassy and will follow the same global schedule.

The NEA’s Decision No. 16 of 2025 outlines the full framework governing overseas voting. According to the guidelines, every Egyptian residing abroad who is registered in the national voter database and possesses the proper identification has the right to vote via direct, secret ballot. Each voter must cast their vote in person at the designated diplomatic mission.

Inside Egypt, voting will be held on August 4 and 5, while the final results of the first round are expected to be announced on August 12. In cases that require a runoff, voting will take place for expatriates on August 25 and 26, and for residents inside Egypt on August 27 and 28. The final certified results are scheduled for release in the official gazette on September 4.

To support informed participation, the NEA has published a comprehensive electoral guide, answering frequently asked questions and outlining key procedures both inside and outside Egypt. The guide serves as a vital resource for voters and candidates alike, promoting transparency and ensuring the credibility of the electoral process.

The guide is accessible through the NEA’s official website at www.elections.eg, and can also be downloaded via the authority’s mobile app available on Google Play and Apple’s App Store.

This round of Senate elections highlights the continued efforts of Egyptian authorities to engage the global diaspora in shaping the nation’s political future, underlining the constitutional right of every Egyptian, no matter where they reside, to be part of the democratic process.
