Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Expatriates Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, met on Monday with Hanna Tetteh, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya, as part of ongoing consultations between Egypt and the United Nations on the latest developments in Libya and efforts to advance a comprehensive political settlement to the country’s protracted crisis.

According to Ambassador Tamim Khalaf, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s steadfast position on the Libyan issue, rooted in support for a purely Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political solution, free from external interference or imposed agendas. He emphasized that such an approach remains the only viable path toward restoring stability and security in Libya.

Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s full support for the UN envoy’s mission and commended her ongoing efforts to implement the UN Roadmap. He stressed the importance of moving forward with its key components, foremost among them the formation of a new, unified government tasked with preparing for simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections at the earliest possible date. The minister underscored the need to adhere to a clear and credible timeline in order to maintain confidence in the political process and fulfill the aspirations of the Libyan people for peace, stability, and development.

The Egyptian foreign minister also highlighted Cairo’s intensive consultations with all Libyan parties aimed at fostering inclusive national dialogue. Egypt, he said, continues to encourage all stakeholders to engage constructively in the political process in a way that restores Libya to its people and preserves the country’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s firm stance on the withdrawal of all foreign forces, foreign fighters, and mercenaries from Libyan territory without exception or delay, in compliance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions. Such a step, he affirmed, is a fundamental prerequisite for achieving lasting stability in the country.

He further stressed the importance of adopting a comprehensive approach to resolving the Libyan crisis, one that considers its political, economic, security, and social dimensions rather than focusing narrowly on a single track. Addressing the root causes of the conflict, he argued, is essential for ensuring sustainable stability both in Libya and across the broader region.

The meeting concluded with a mutual reaffirmation of Egypt’s continued support for UN and regional efforts aimed at stabilizing Libya, strengthening its national institutions, and helping them fulfill their responsibilities toward achieving the aspirations of the Libyan people for security, prosperity, and national unity.
