French energy giant TotalEnergies has signed a new memorandum of understanding with the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) to advance offshore exploration efforts in northwestern Egypt, marking a fresh push into the country’s deepwater energy frontier.

The agreement, signed in Paris, establishes a framework for technical cooperation and early-stage exploration work aimed at assessing the region’s untapped hydrocarbon potential beneath Egypt’s Mediterranean offshore waters.

Deepwater Ambition in the Mediterranean Basin

Under the deal, TotalEnergies and Egypt’s state-backed Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company will jointly conduct subsurface studies and geological evaluations across a large offshore block in northwestern Egypt.

The focus will be on identifying deep offshore natural gas reserves, a segment that has become increasingly strategic as Egypt seeks to reinforce its position as a regional energy hub in the Eastern Mediterranean. Company officials said the collaboration is designed to move beyond preliminary mapping into more advanced geological and geophysical assessments that could pave the way for future drilling campaigns.

Strengthening Egypt’s Energy Investment Magnet

Speaking on the agreement, TotalEnergies senior vice president of exploration Nicola Mavilla said the partnership reflects a shared ambition to deepen cooperation with Cairo and unlock new energy potential.

“We are pleased to launch this cooperation with EGAS,” Mavilla said. “This agreement will support the assessment of Egypt’s deep offshore exploration potential.” For Egypt, the deal is part of a wider strategy to attract international oil and gas investment at a time when global energy companies are increasingly competing for high-potential offshore basins.

Egypt’s Offshore Strategy Gains Momentum

Egypt has been steadily positioning its offshore Mediterranean resources as a cornerstone of its long-term energy strategy, particularly as the country works to expand natural gas production and secure export capacity.

The northwestern offshore region, though less developed than other Mediterranean fields, is viewed by energy analysts as a promising frontier for deepwater discoveries, especially as exploration technology advances and seismic data improves.

Energy Security and Economic Pressure

The agreement also comes as Egypt continues to balance rising domestic energy demand with its ambitions to become a key regional supplier of liquefied natural gas.

By expanding exploration partnerships with global energy majors like TotalEnergies, Cairo aims to strengthen its long-term energy security while attracting foreign currency inflows through future production and export growth.

The new MoU reinforces Egypt’s broader economic narrative: leveraging its geographic position and offshore resources to stabilize its energy sector while navigating global price volatility and regional uncertainty.
