Egypt Daily News – Egypt’s Permanent United Nations Ambassador, Osama Abdel-Khalek, called for Israel’s withdrawal from Palestinian and Lebanese territories during a recent UN Security Council (UNSC) briefing on the Middle East.
He urged the UNSC to pass a resolution under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, which would mandate Israel to cease fire in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon. This includes reopening all border crossings, allowing humanitarian aid, and ending the forced displacement of civilians as well as targeting of UN personnel.
Abdel-Khalek highlighted the urgent need for action, citing alarming statistics claiming that Israel has killed over 42,000 people in Gaza, primarily women and children, since the renewed conflict began in October 2023. He criticized the UNSC for its leniency, claiming this has allowed Israel to continue its military actions for over a year.
He emphasized the importance of preserving the two-state solution and reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to supporting legitimate Palestinian rights.
Additionally, he urged the council to implement a temporary truce and facilitate aid entry into Gaza. He noted ongoing mediation efforts involving Egypt, the US, and Qatar aimed at establishing a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Abdel-Khalek accused Israel of conducting a “war of revenge” against the Palestinian people, citing legislation passed by the Israeli Knesset that undermines the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
This legislation further exacerbates the humanitarian crisis, as UNRWA has been crucial in aiding Palestinian refugees since its establishment in 1949.
The situation in Gaza remains dire, with significant loss of life and extensive damage to infrastructure, while the humanitarian needs of the population are growing increasingly urgent.
